Sarah Visit!
Sarah visited today and taught us about hibernation. We got to see a stuffed groundhog and we felt some different types of animal fur. We learned that the groundhog's heartbeat REALLY slows down when it is hibernating.
Science Today!
We did experiments today to see if wood floated or if it sunk when put into water. We used a pine sample and a plywood sample. Both of the wood floated in the water. Then we used paper clips to see how many we would need on the wood to make the wood sink. We did an excellent job and it was fun!

Week of January 27th!
Monday
No School-Snow Day
Tuesday
We had a late start today. We worked on learning our new sight words: your, be, will, that, who, into. We read a The 100th Day and made a picture of what we would look like and be doing when we are 100 years old! We had Guidance today. We did Jacub’s Star of the Week. We had to wait to do Zoe’s Star of the Week book because she was sick. We had PE.
Wednesday
We had our 100th Day fun! We read another story about the 100th Day of School and we did a lot of counting. We sat quietly for 100 seconds. We made crowns to celebrate our big day. We made a snack with 100 things in it to eat. Yum! We created pictures with the number 100. We shared our 100 items in our bags at our tables. We had to give clues and make guesses about what was in the bag. We had library.
Thursday
We wrote words from our Mystery Jar. We worked on looking at our own paper and using our own brain to do the work. We learned that it is important to do our best and be learners instead of getting it “right” by looking at someone else’s work. After we wrote our words, we checked to see how many sounds we got correct. We read a story called Atlantic. We learned a bit about the way water moves in a circle. We played Bang! with our sight words. We wrote in our School to Home Journal. We colored 101 dots on a picture of a Dalmation. We had music.
Things to work on at home:
*All of the sight words we have worked on
*Knowing the numbers to 20
I Can
No I Can assessments will be coming home again today. I will be sending home just an assessments of how your child is doing on the sight words we have worked on so far. If they are not circled, they are ones they need to work on. We are also going to continue to work on all of the sight words we have learned into next week and not be learning any new ones next week.
Exercise
We have started exercising in the room for 4-5 minutes each day before we start our literacy time. The students are really having a tough time settling in and being learners. We started it on Wednesday and will try to do it each day. I am hoping this can help them settle in a bit. It is hard with all of the missed days and late starts, but the reality is that we have to keep pushing and learning!!
Upcoming Events:
*February 5th- Early Out
*February 14th-Valentine’s Day Party
*February 19th-Early Out
*February 27th-Conferences
100 Day Fun!
We had a lot of fun on our 100th Day of School! We read books, made crowns, made a snack of 100 things, shared our 100 collections with our table mates, when on a search and find for numbers, and we watched a tiny bit of 101 Dalmations!
High School Helper!
Rachelle Annen is working in our class every other day for two weeks and then she will work in Mrs. Achey's classroom for two weeks. She will continue to switch between the two classes until the end of the year. Rachelle is a Senior at Tipton High School. She is interested in being a teacher, so she is doing a practicum in kindergarten!!

100th Day of School!
We will be celebrating our 100th Day of School on Tuesday, January 28th (if we would happen to have another snow day, it would be Wednesday). We celebrate and educate at the same time to recognize this day! Please help your child make a collection of 100 things to bring that day. It can be very simple: 100 Cheerios, 100 cotton balls, 100 pop tabs, 100 noodles, 100 pennies, 100 M&Ms, or 100 stickers. Try to help your child think of something small to use. We will be using their collections to do different activities on that day. They have made a paper bag that is coming home today to put their collection in. There is also things that they can fill out on the bag about the collection they picked.
Thanks for helping make this day fun!

I Can Statements
I am including our first I Can Statements today on our Blog. These are the targets we are working on this week and into the next few weeks. You will see assessments come home that will reflect how your child is doing. The I Can Statements come from the Iowa Common Core that determines what all kindergarten students should be able to do at the end of the year. Please let me know if you have any questions!
I can write a sentence that has a capital at the beginning, has spaces between words, punctuation, sight words spelled correctly, and use our Jolly Phonics to sound out unknown words.
I can read our kindergarten sight words.
I can name numbers 11-19 and write them.

Sarah's Visit!
Sarah visited today to teach us about Arctic animals! We had so much fun! We learned about a small animal called an Ermine that lives in the Arctic. We got to feel it and pretend like we were Ermine's searching through a tunnel to find mice. We also felt a Muskrat. Muskrats eat Ermines. We also learned about the White Snowy Owl and the Great Horned Owl. We got to feel the wing and foot of a Great Horned Owl. We learned these three things:
1. Ermines are brown in the summer and white in the winter to camouflage themselves from predators. 2. Ermines tunnel through snow tunnels to find mice.
3. White Snowy Owls eat Ermines. Their sharp talons pick them up.
We measure the wingspan of a White Snowy Owl. Then, some of us got to see how our wingspan compared the the owl.
We also saw how tall a White Snowy Owl is and compared it to use sitting on our legs.
